You should be able to connect the following appliances to a typical inverter system. However, bear in mind that this ought only to be done so long as the total power consumption does not exceed the maximum kW rating of the unit:
- Home alarm system
- Electric fence
- DSTV and MNet decoders
- Microwave oven
- Fridge and deep freezer
- Surround sound systems
- Automatic garage door motor
- Lights (preferably LED)

- Intercom
- Small kettle
Don’t:
You should definitely avoid connecting these items to your back-up power system. Why? Because they typically have high inrush currents, or use a great deal of power…
- Dishwashers
- Geysers
- Air conditioners
- Underfloor heating
- Washing machines
- Stoves
- Pool motors
- Tumble driers
