Just when you thought you were out of the dark, you get that dreaded ping from your SePush app – a sobering reminder that load shedding is not going away, not any time soon.
Your load-shedding woes are far from over…
Stage 2 load shedding was implemented yesterday. Eskom has stated that they have to deliberately cut electricity to many communities in the country, in an effort to ease pressure on the already constrained grid.
The Power Utility Department has implemented load shedding until Friday, with a high possibility of it continuing throughout the weekend.
Eskom claims that this latest round of power cuts are due to “loss of generation capacity and to replenish emergency generation reserves.”
When the Utility implements load shedding, there are various instances which could bring the decision about, such as:
- Stagnated supply of electricity due to poor maintenance of power lines
- Reduced production by equipment failure and/or damage to power generating stations (such as nuclear power stations, coal plants etc.)
- Sudden power failures and downtime and/or widespread blackouts
- Reduced production of renewable energy due to climate / weather conditions
- Lack of water holds back hydropower operation during drought seasons
- Wind-still weather holds back wind power operations
- Less hours of sunshine holds back solar power operations
- Structurally insufficient production of electricity on all sources to meet the high power demand
- Peak in demand due to heatwaves
Eskom goes on to say that they were forced to use emergency generation reserves this week as a result of under-performance at its Duvha, Kusile and Tutuka power stations, as well as delays in returning other units to service. The result is the significant depletion of the emergency reserves.
It’s time to consider back-up power solutions!
It is believed that Eskom is not delivering against plans for the expansion of the Country’s infrastructure in order to keep up with our ever-increasing demand for power. The result – continued power interruptions into the foreseeable future.
How do we end our load-shedding predicament once and for all? Hmmm, Eskomplicated… But it doesn’t have to be!
The Utility has appealed to the public to use electricity sparingly while the power grid remains unstable. We’re appealing to YOU to consider back-up power.
