What is the difference between harmonics and transients?
Harmonics and transients can both create distortion on the sinewave. They are both a cause of deviation of the sinewave from its actual form. However, the basic difference between harmonics and transients is that harmonics tend to stay more in a system. Transients are hugely repetitive and are nanosecond occurrences.
Whereas transients are created by inductive load switching, harmonics are created specifically by non-linear loads.
How do you know if you have a Harmonics issue?
It’s easy to assume you have a harmonics issue. However, have you considered that you may potentially have an underlying transient issue?
Equipment such as electric motors, PLCs, VFDs, HMIs, soft starters and flow meters all fall prey to transient activity. Installing a harmonic system may not prevent the disconnect arcs. Disconnect arcs cause equipment failure during the time frame when power is disconnected.
Furthermore, in the event that any form of surge, lightning or transients do pass through your equipment, have you considered how low the let-though voltage is that transfers on to your sensitive equipment?
